ISO 17100 Translation Services — Requirements for translation services
What is ISO 17100?
ISO 17100 is a standard that provides a means of autonomously demonstrating a benchmark of professionalism in the delivery of translation services by the provider to others and something for the client to look for when seeking reliable suppliers.
ISO 17100 Translation services – Service requirements is due to be published in May 2015, has reached its final stage of development and, as a combined European and International standard to be adopted by countries around the world, it follows and improves upon the EN 15038 standard that has served many parts of the world since 2006.
Because there can only be editorial changes to the ISO 1700 standard at this stage it is safe for providers of translation services from freelance to multinational to begin the task of checking how their current processes, resources and controls match the requirements of the new standard. This allows you to be ready to claim conformity immediately upon publication of the new standard and applies to newcomers to the use of standards in establishing professionalism autonomously as well as to those transiting from the EN to the new ISO.
What choices are there in demonstrating conformity to the standard?
Buy the standard as basic plus one of
- Establish conformity yourself
- Obtain help through training and then establish conformity yourself
- Obtain help though consultancy where the conformity is established for you
- Make a self-declaration of conformity
- Obtain certification from an independent third party (independence exists where generic training has been provided but not where consultancy has been provided)
Who provides help for TSPs?
GeoLang Certification specializes in services for Translation and Interpreting Service Providers and can help with training followed by certification as the most cost effective path to certification but can also provide consultancy at a generally higher cost and certification has to be provided by some other certification body.
Some other bodies offer training and some other bodies provide certification but few provide both and most other certification bodies do not specialize on this industry and none as economically as can GeoLang Certification.
